KM#34 is cataloged as an "unauthorized issue" — a designation that places it outside the official sanction of the Banque Nationale de Djibouti. Such pieces, appearing with some regularity from smaller African states in the early 2000s, were typically produced by private mints and sold directly into the collector market without ever entering circulation. Djibouti's authorized 10 Francs coinage was struck at the Paris Mint; this piece was not.
