Dutch New Guinea maintained its own currency even as the political status of the territory became increasingly untenable through the 1950s. This note was issued under Dutch colonial administration at a moment when Indonesia had been pressing its claim to the territory since independence in 1949 — the Dutch held on until 1962, when the New York Agreement transferred administration to the UN and then to Indonesia the following year.

Joh. Enschedé en Zonen printed colonial and overseas issues for the Netherlands throughout this period, and their work on the Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea series is technically clean. Notes from the later years of the series saw relatively limited circulation before the currency was dissolved during the 1963 transition.
