Dunkelstein is a small settlement in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, it issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that followed the First World War. The 10 Heller note from Gemeinde Dunkelstein falls within that sprawling 1920–1921 wave of Austrian municipal issues, when the central government's inability to supply small-denomination coinage forced even villages with negligible administrative capacity to print their own scrip.

The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0136-10 places it firmly in the documented Austrian Notgeld corpus, though surviving examples from Dunkelstein are infrequently offered — small-run village issues were rarely preserved in quantity once the Heller was retired.
