Judenau is a small market village in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized Austrian municipalities, it issued Notgeld during the kleingeld shortage that gripped the country from roughly 1916 onward. The Heller denominations were the workhorses of this emergency coinage replacement — not collectibles at the time of issue, but practical substitutes for the small copper and bronze coins that had disappeared from circulation into hoarding and wartime metal demands.

The JPR prefix in the Jaksch reference places this firmly in the Austrian municipal series. Survival rates for Judenau issues are modest; the village's small population meant limited print runs, and most circulated until they fell apart.
