Comments

Zistersdorf notgeld from the First World War period, issued when small-denomination coinage had been almost entirely hoarded or melted. The Market Town of Zistersdorf — a settlement in Lower Austria whose economy was already tied to early petroleum extraction — produced these emergency issues through local printer Franz Schweng in nearby Bangerndorf rather than through any central authority. Small-run local printing like this accounts for the considerable variation in impression quality across surviving examples of Austrian municipal notgeld from this period.
