Issued to mark the 300th anniversary of Sveriges Riksbank — founded in 1668, making it the oldest central bank in the world still in operation — this commemorative note was a deliberate institutional statement at a time when central bank credibility was under strain across Western economies. The 1960s had seen the Bretton Woods system creaking badly, and Sweden was not immune to the pressures on fixed exchange rates.

Tumba Bruk, the paper mill and printing facility outside Stockholm, had supplied Riksbank with banknote paper since the eighteenth century, giving this issue an unbroken domestic production chain that few countries could claim.
