Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's global coin program, which in the early 1970s encouraged member nations to mint circulating pieces promoting agricultural development. Turkey's participation reflected the country's ongoing rural modernization efforts under successive government plans that prioritized grain production and mechanized farming in Anatolia.

The FAO coin program produced hundreds of types across dozens of countries between 1968 and the mid-1980s, many struck in small quantities that never saw meaningful circulation.
