Obverse description Central field displays the national emblem of the Maldives, comprising a crescent and star surmounted by a coconut palm tree, flanked on either side by two national flags on staffs. A decorative ribbon banner inscribed in Arabic script appears below the emblem. The Gregorian year 1960 is inscribed to the left along the inner border, and the Hijri year ١٣٧٩ (1379) to the right, following the scalloped contour of the coin.
