Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a detailed intaglio landscape vignette of the Soroca Fortress on the Dniester River, its stone towers and curtain walls rendered in fine line engraving against a pastoral background. An ornamental floral rosette guilloche motif appears above the fortress scene, while the denomination numeral "10" occupies the left margin alongside a vertical palm-frond guilloche border. The state name "REPUBLICA MOLDOVA" is inscribed across the upper panel, and the value "ZECE LEI" appears in a solid dark band at the foot of the note.

Comments

Moldova's first banknote series was rushed into production following the declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, with the leu introduced in November 1993 to replace the Soviet ruble — but these notes were printed in 1992 in anticipation, sitting in reserve until the currency changeover was ready. The transition was unusually compressed: Moldova had no central banking infrastructure of its own, and Leonid Talmaci, whose signature appears here, had been appointed governor of a newly created institution that was still finding its legal footing.
