Sierra Leone's economy was under severe strain by 1988 — the leone had lost the vast majority of its official value through the 1980s, driven by a combination of diamond revenue mismanagement, fiscal deficits, and a parallel market that routinely traded at multiples of the official rate. The 10 Leone denomination, once meaningful, had been badly eroded in purchasing power by the time this note entered circulation.
De La Rue printed this series throughout its run, a relationship with the Bank of Sierra Leone that stretched across several decades and multiple redesigns. The watermark is the sole security feature — modest provision for a note already struggling against inflation.
