Additional information

Crete's autonomous administration under Prince George of Greece — established by the Great Powers in 1898 following the island's de facto separation from the Ottoman Empire — required its own coinage to function as a credible self-governing entity. These pieces were struck in Paris, the Cretan State lacking any mint of its own. The arrangement lasted barely a decade; when Crete formally unified with Greece in 1913, the entire series became obsolete almost overnight.
