Obverse description Central device depicts a phoenix rising, with a cross surmounting the bird and radiating sun rays emanating from the left, all enclosed within a solid inner circle. Five-pointed stars are arranged above the phoenix in the upper field. The peripheral legend in Greek script reads ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΠΟΛΙΤΕΙΑ with the date αωκα΄ (1821), referencing the founding of the Hellenic State. The design is executed in a neoclassical style consistent with the early coinage of independent Greece under Governor Kapodistrias.
