Italian civilian internment camps operated under a parallel economy — inmates were permitted to hold and spend scrip rather than national currency, partly to prevent any accumulation of legal tender that might facilitate escape. The Campo di Concentramento per Internati Civili at Padova issued this note for internal canteen and administrative transactions during the years Italy was processing political detainees, foreign nationals, and from 1940 onward, wartime internees.
Camp scrip of this type was rarely preserved. Most was surrendered or destroyed at release or liberation, and the Padova camp's material is among the scarcer Italian internment issues.
