Lesotho's coinage program launched in 1966 with independence from Britain, but the 10 lisente denomination went through a prolonged identity crisis tied directly to the political turbulence surrounding Moshoeshoe II. The king was twice deposed — first in 1990, then permanently in 1995 — by Prime Minister Lekhanya's military government, which stripped him of executive powers as early as 1990. The decade this coin spans was one of mounting constitutional tension between the monarchy and the military council that ultimately ended his reign.
