Hasbro introduced the Crooked Cash Edition in 2021 as a mechanical game variant — the set includes a battery-powered "M.R. MONOPOLY" scanner that supposedly detects counterfeit bills inserted by a cheat player. The gimmick requires two note designs to coexist in the same game: legitimate currency and deliberately fake duplicates, with the scanner distinguishing between them via embedded features invisible to the naked eye.
Whether the detection technology holds up through repeated play is another matter. The scanner's reliability drew complaints almost immediately after release.
