Nigeria's 10 Naira entered circulation after the 1973 decimalization that replaced the pound sterling-linked system with the naira and kobo — a monetary restructuring timed deliberately to distance the country from its colonial currency architecture following independence and, more pressingly, the economic dislocations of the Biafran War. Thomas De La Rue handled production throughout the series, as they did for most of Nigeria's early naira issues.

Two distinct signature combinations appear across the print run, with F.A. Adekunle remaining as one signatory through both the 1973 and 1977 pairings — an unusual degree of continuity across a period of significant political turbulence, including the 1975 coup that removed Gowon.
