Additional information

Anastasius I's currency reform of 498 AD overhauled a coinage system that had deteriorated so badly that small copper denominations had lost any meaningful relationship to their stated value. The reform reintroduced clearly marked bronze denominations — the follis, half-follis, decanummium, and pentanummium — for the first time in generations, with the mark of value stamped explicitly on the face. This piece, the decanummium, is the second-smallest denomination that reform produced.

Constantinople mint output during the early reform years shows considerable variation in module and weight, reflecting the logistical difficulty of standardizing production across a system that had been effectively improvised for decades.
