Obverse description Central field features a finely detailed Māori hei-tiki neck pendant rendered in high relief, depicted in the traditional crouching posture with stylised facial features and spiral body ornamentation. To the right, a taiaha (traditional long weapon) stands vertically, its blade and butt both carved with characteristic Māori motifs. The left border of the field is framed by an intricate panel of Māori kowhaiwhai scroll and rafter patterns. The legend 'RAKIURA' arcs prominently across the upper field in large incuse letters, with the date '2017' appearing above in the upper exergue. The vertical legend 'TEKAU PEARA PANGO' is inscribed along the right inner border.

Additional information

Rakiura — the Māori name for Stewart Island meaning "glowing skies" or, by some accounts, "the land of Terawhiti" — became New Zealand's third-largest island and newest national park in 2002. The Pango (black-footed) penguin referenced here is the little blue penguin, and this piece belongs to New Zealand's ongoing regional fantasy currency program, which issues collector tokens denominated in fictional local units with no legal tender status anywhere.

Silver-plated copper-nickel with applied colour is the workhorse format of this market segment, produced in large runs for the souvenir trade rather than numismatic cabinets.
