The Cooperativa Bagurense was one of hundreds of Catalan consumer cooperatives that issued their own emergency small-change paper during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain coin circulation created a vacuum filled at the purely local level. These notes — technically vales or tokens rather than currency — were honored only within the issuing cooperative's own commercial network, which in a small Costa Brava town like Begur meant a very limited circulation pool.
The AL reference places this within Andreu i Llonch's exhaustive catalog of Catalan local issues. Most pieces from cooperatives this small survive in tiny quantities, having been redeemed quickly or simply discarded once the war's outcome made the issuing body irrelevant.
