The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México received its formal autonomy from the Mexican federal government in 1929, a concession wrested through student strikes that paralyzed the capital. The centenary commemorated here marks not 1929 but the 1910 re-founding under Justo Sierra during the Díaz administration — weeks before the Revolution broke out and rendered the entire political order that created it obsolete.
