| Obverse description | The obverse centres on an intaglio vignette of a standing female allegorical figure holding a sheaf of grain and flowers, rendered in classical engraving style against a finely hatched background. The obligation WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND arches above the denomination TEN PESOS, with serial numbers printed in black at lower left and upper right. A red circular cancellation stamp overlies the left portion of the design, and two heavy black bars suppress portions of the note in a manner consistent with trial or specimen cancellation practice. |

The Philippine National Bank was established in 1916 partly to finance the sugar industry and reduce Filipino dependence on foreign commercial banks — this 1917 issue came in the bank's first full year of operation. The American Bank Note Company had long handled Philippine currency work under American colonial administration, and the relationship continued seamlessly into the new national bank's early issues.
P#43A is distinguished from the closely related P#43 by its signature combination, a detail that trips up collectors who overlook the underprint variations within this series.
