Additional information

Part of a 32-coin series issued between 2003 and 2007 celebrating each Mexican state, the Baja California Sur piece appeared in 2006 alongside the other states scheduled for that year's release. Banco de México contracted the series specifically to stimulate numismatic interest in fine silver, with each coin legal tender at 10 pesos despite containing silver worth multiples of face value at the time of issue.

Baja California Sur only achieved full statehood in 1974, making it one of the last Mexican territories to do so — a consequence of its sparse population and geographic isolation on the peninsula.
