| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a celebrated encounter between Fidel Castro and Ernest Hemingway, rendered in a portrait-style composition. A curved legend along the upper portion reads 50 ANIVERSARIO, while the date 2010 appears to the right field. A four-line straight inscription in the lower portion of the field commemorates the Encuentro de Fidel Castro y Ernest Hemingway, with the commemorative dates 1960-2010 denoting the fiftieth anniversary of the historic meeting. |

Cuba has issued commemorative silver in quantity since the 1980s, much of it aimed squarely at the foreign collector market rather than domestic circulation. This pairing of Castro and Hemingway on a single coin is a product of that export-oriented program — an unusual conjunction reflecting Hemingway's well-documented relationship with Cuba, where he lived for over twenty years at Finca Vigía outside Havana and famously met Fidel Castro at the 1960 Ernest Hemingway Fishing Tournament.
