The Banco de San Juan was one of several provincial Argentine banks chartered in the 1850s and 1860s under a fragmented federal banking system that allowed individual provinces to issue their own currency. San Juan, a small Andean province dependent on wine and mining, had limited commercial activity — which means notes from this bank saw restricted circulation and were not printed in large quantities.

The undated "18__" format was standard ABNC practice for provincial Latin American clients: plates were engraved once, with the year left blank for hand-completion at time of issue. PS#1882 is among the scarcer San Juan entries in the Pick specialized catalog.
