Comments

Bützow is a small Mecklenburg town, and like hundreds of German municipalities it issued its own Kleingeldersatz — small-change substitutes — during the acute coin shortage that set in after 1916. These civic notgeld issues were purely functional stopgaps, authorized locally and redeemable within the issuing community only. Most circulated hard and fast in a tight geographic radius before being returned, worn, or simply lost.

The DeNG reference places this within the first wave of necessity issues, before the collectible "series" notgeld boom of 1921–1922 transformed the practice into a philatelic industry.
