Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which encouraged member nations to mint coins carrying agricultural themes as a low-cost public awareness campaign. Myanmar's participation came under the State Law and Order Restoration Council, the military junta that had seized power in 1988 following the brutal suppression of pro-democracy protests.
