Pick 53 belongs to the third series of Malaysian banknotes, introduced progressively from 2012 onward. Bank Negara Malaysia began the series partly in response to counterfeiting concerns with the second series, though the security upgrade was modest by regional standards — the thread and watermark combination had already been standard across Southeast Asian central bank issues for over a decade by the time this note entered circulation.
Cotton substrate was retained despite Malaysia having explored polymer alternatives; the decision reflected cost and infrastructure considerations rather than any security preference.
