Issued as part of the FAO's global "Food for All" campaign, this piece was struck alongside dozens of similar commemoratives from member nations in the early 1970s — a coordinated effort to raise awareness of food security following the 1972–74 world food crisis, which saw wheat prices triple and widespread famine threaten South Asia. Nepal participated as one of the smaller issuing authorities in the series, producing a low-silver billon piece rather than a fine silver issue, reflecting the country's limited mint infrastructure at the time and its dependence on the Indian Mint in Calcutta for production.
