The 1974 Seychelles rupee coinage predates independence by a single year — the islands became a republic in June 1976, ending over 200 years of colonial administration, first French then British. This issue therefore belongs to a narrow transitional window, struck under Crown authority while independence negotiations were already underway. The 10 Rupees was the highest denomination in the circulating series that year.
