Reverse description A finely detailed, naturalistically rendered standing figure of the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus), the extinct flightless bird endemic to Mauritius, occupies the centre of the field, facing left. The bird's plumage, hooked beak, vestigial wing, and scaled feet are rendered with considerable sculptural precision by engraver Christopher Ironside. The upper legend MAURITIUS INDEPENDENCE arcs around the top of the coin, while the denomination 10 RUPEES appears along the lower arc, both separated by small raised dots. A beaded inner border surrounds the entire composition.
