| Obverse description | The entire obverse field is occupied by a bold, intricately styled Arabic calligraphic inscription arranged in a decorative interlocking composition. The legend reads 'Al-Sultan Ali bin Hamud', identifying the reigning Sultan of Zanzibar. The script is rendered in a dense, ornamental Naskh-influenced style that fills the coin's field to the rim, with no portraiture, devices, or exergue present. The calligraphy is deeply struck, giving strong relief against the flat field. The overall design reflects the Islamic artistic tradition prevalent in Zanzibari coinage of the early twentieth century. |
