Tupou VI acceded to the Tongan throne in March 2012 following the death of his brother George Tupou V, himself the monarch who oversaw Tonga's significant democratic reforms of 2010 — stripping the crown of most executive powers and shifting governance toward an elected parliament. This coin is among the first circulating issues to bear the new king's effigy under that constitutionally reduced monarchy.
