Biafra ceased to exist as a state in January 1970, when federal Nigerian forces completed their reconquest after a brutal 30-month civil war that killed between one and three million people, largely through engineered famine. This coin is a modern fantasy piece — no issuing authority for a sovereign Biafra exists today, and it carries no legal tender status anywhere. These items are produced by private mints and marketed to collectors under the guise of nationhood.
