The copper-nickel outer ring carries the circular legend 'BAANKA SOMALILAND' along the upper arc and 'SHILIN 10 SHILLINGS' along the lower arc, in incuse lettering. A continuous row of small beads runs along the inner and outer edges of the ring, serving as decorative borders.

Additional information

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never received formal international recognition, leaving its currency in a peculiar position — accepted domestically yet invisible to global financial systems. The Bank of Somaliland has nonetheless issued a consistent coinage series, partly to assert functional statehood through the most tangible symbols available to a government.

The "Empty leaves" designation refers to a die variety distinguishable from parallel strikes of the same type by the absence of detail in the wreath foliage — a known production inconsistency within KM#73.
