| Additional information |
Biafra has not existed as a functioning state since January 1970, when secessionist forces surrendered to the Nigerian federal government after a brutal thirty-month civil war that killed an estimated one to three million people. Coins issued under its name in the twenty-first century are produced entirely for the collector market by private mints, with no governmental authority, no circulation, and no monetary system behind them. The rhinoceros subject has no historical connection to Biafra whatsoever.
