The 186 series was part of Turkey's fifth emission group, introduced in the late 1960s as the central bank's printing works in Ankara — established in 1955 — took on full domestic production of the currency. The transition away from foreign printers, particularly De La Rue, was a deliberate policy decision tied to both cost and security concerns following the 1960 military coup, which had prompted a thorough review of state financial infrastructure.
Watermark-only security was already considered minimal by this point, and the series was eventually superseded by the sixth emission with considerably improved anti-counterfeiting measures.
