Issued the same year Samoa hosted its first Pacific Games, this small gold piece belongs to a wave of Olympic-themed issues that Pacific island mints produced throughout the 1990s — largely sold to foreign collectors rather than circulated domestically. Tanumafili II, who held joint head of state status with Tupua Tamasese Efi until the latter's death in 1963 left him sole O le Ao o le Malo, lent his name to dozens of commemorative issues during this period as the Central Bank built its collector coin program.
