Reverse description A muscular male athlete is depicted in dynamic mid-motion as a discus thrower, rendered in high relief against a textured background that fills the majority of the coin's field. The figure is shown in a powerful coiled stance, arms extended, capturing the athleticism of the classical Olympic discipline. The curved legend 'OLYMPIC GAMES 1996' arcs along the upper periphery, while the date '1995' appears to the right of the figure in the lower field.

Additional information

Issued the same year Samoa hosted its first Pacific Games, this small gold piece belongs to a wave of Olympic-themed issues that Pacific island mints produced throughout the 1990s — largely sold to foreign collectors rather than circulated domestically. Tanumafili II, who held joint head of state status with Tupua Tamasese Efi until the latter's death in 1963 left him sole O le Ao o le Malo, lent his name to dozens of commemorative issues during this period as the Central Bank built its collector coin program.
