Obverse description The national coat of arms of Western Samoa occupies the central field, depicting a heraldic shield bearing a coconut palm above stylised ocean waves with five stars representing the Southern Cross constellation, surmounted by a Christian cross. The shield is supported by two laurel branches forming a wreath, with a ribbon below bearing the national motto. The ship is rendered in profile with multiple masts, furled and billowing sails, and a hull riding turbulent waves rendered in stylised relief. The legend 'SMS "ADLER" 1889' arcs across the upper field in raised Latin lettering, while the year of issue '2003' appears in the lower exergue.
