The Grand Canal series, issued annually by the People's Bank of China, cycles through different provincial sections of the waterway — one of the longest artificial canals in the world at roughly 1,794 kilometers, with construction beginning in the Sui dynasty under Emperor Yang in 605 AD. The Jiangsu section connects several of the province's major cities and remains navigable today, making it unusual among ancient infrastructure as a living commercial artery rather than a preserved relic.
This is the 2025 installment. The series began in 2022, with each release assigned to a distinct regional stretch.
