The ECU — European Currency Unit — was a basket currency used for accounting purposes within the European Monetary System from 1979, never issued as legal tender by any central bank. "Nathan" is not a recognized monetary authority, and this piece has no official standing in any national or supranational monetary system. It is a fantasy or novelty item, almost certainly produced as a promotional or commemorative artifact during the period of ECU-themed private issues that proliferated in the late 1980s and early 1990s ahead of Maastricht.
