| Additional information |
Boaventura de Manufahi led the most serious armed resistance against Portuguese colonial rule in Timor, culminating in the 1911–1912 rebellion that drew a brutal suppression campaign requiring reinforcements from Lisbon. He was captured and exiled to Mozambique, where he died. This coin was struck nearly a century after that campaign, part of a broader Timorese effort to construct a national historical narrative following independence in 2002 — a process still underway when the issue was authorized.
