The Centrale Bank van Suriname introduced this denomination as part of a broader redenomination effort — Suriname having suffered one of the more dramatic currency collapses in recent South American history, with inflation exceeding 60% in 2020 alone. The new Surinamese dollar series, of which this is the top circulating coin, was designed to restore practical utility to everyday transactions after the old SRD had been gutted by years of monetary mismanagement under the Bouterse government.
KM#23 is a recent enough issue that die varieties and mintage breakdowns by year remain poorly documented in the major references.
