The Cruzado Novo lasted barely a year. Introduced in January 1989 as part of the Plano Verão austerity package — itself an attempt to salvage what the 1986 Plano Cruzado had failed to fix — it was replaced by the Cruzeiro in March 1990 when inflation had already rendered the denomination effectively ceremonial. Brazil's annualized inflation rate in 1989 exceeded 1,700 percent.

The two signature combinations on this note reflect the brief tenure of Central Bank president Elmo de Araújo Camões, replaced mid-series by Wadico Waldir Bucchi. Both served under Finance Minister Maílson da Nóbrega, who remained in post throughout.
