Trinidad and Tobago declared independence from Britain in 1962 and became a republic on August 1, 1976 — the fifth anniversary of which prompted this commemorative issue. The timing coincided with a period of significant oil wealth for the twin-island state; revenues from the petroleum boom of the 1970s funded an ambitious program of commemorative and proof coinage through the late decade and into the early 1980s.
The .500 fineness is notably low for a commemorative gold issue, a deliberate production choice that kept material costs manageable during a period when gold spot prices were still elevated following the 1980 peak above $800 per troy ounce.
