The "Sovereign Queens of England" series was issued across three years by the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly as part of a broader Caribbean gold coin boom following the 1974 U.S. legalization of private gold ownership. The Cayman Islands, having only achieved full internal self-government in 1972, used prestige bullion issues partly as a revenue mechanism and partly to establish numismatic identity distinct from its British dependent territory status.
