Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the Bank of Greece, which was established in 1928 to replace the National Bank of Greece as the country's central bank — a transition tied directly to the League of Nations financial stabilization program imposed on Greece following the catastrophic population exchange with Turkey and the resulting economic strain. The Bank of Greece absorbed the note-issuing monopoly at a moment when the country was still resettling over a million refugees from Anatolia.
