Additional information

Elobey Grande and Elobey Chico are two small islands in the Bight of Biafra that briefly functioned as the administrative capital of Spanish Guinea in the late nineteenth century, before the colonial seat shifted to Bata on the mainland. Today they are essentially uninhabited. Their appearance on a 2013 Equatorial Guinean coin is a curatorial choice — the country has issued numerous collector-oriented bimetallic pieces referencing its colonial and geographic history, aimed squarely at the numismatic market rather than circulation.
