Banco Nacional Ultramarino served as the currency-issuing authority for Portuguese colonial territories, and this 100 Escudos note was issued for Angola — one of several parallel series the BNU maintained across its overseas provinces simultaneously, each with distinct plates but produced under the same Bradbury Wilkinson contract. By 1964, Angolan nationalist insurgency had been active for three years following the 1961 uprisings, making this a note circulating through a territory already deep in colonial conflict.
Bradbury Wilkinson's intaglio work for Portuguese colonial issues is generally among their finer output from this period. The watermark remains the sole security feature — modest by contemporary standards even then.
