Part of the Bank of Greece's ongoing bullion and collector series drawing on classical mythology, this issue honors Ares at a moment when European central banks were aggressively expanding precious-metal numismatic programs to capture collector demand that had migrated heavily toward gold during the post-2008 and COVID-era uncertainty. Greece's own economic history with the euro — the sovereign debt crisis, the bailouts, the capital controls of 2015 — gives any gold issue from Athens a particular charge that identical specs from another mint simply would not carry.
