The P#55 series spans over a decade of issue, a long run that reflects the relative monetary stability Belgium enjoyed before the pressures of the 1880s bimetallism debates began forcing institutional changes. Henri Hendrickx designed extensively for the Banque Nationale during this period, and Adolphe Ligny's intaglio work on this note is among the finer examples of mid-century Belgian engraving — Ligny trained in the French tradition and brought a precision to facial modeling that separates his output from contemporaries working in Brussels at the time.
Paper survival across the full 1869–1882 date range is uneven. Earlier dated examples are considerably scarcer.
